Why Selling Used Cars To Friends Is A Bad Idea

When I wanted to get rid of my old car I decided to sell it to one of my neighbours who I was quite friendly with. I had not planned on doing this but when my neighbour realised I had bought a new car, he came up to me to find out what my plans were for my old car.

We had been fairly good friends up until this; we socialised in the local bar a lot and our wives also got on well together. When he suggested that he buy my old car it seemed like the ideal solution. Even though he offered a lower price than I originally wanted for the car, I thought it was still a good idea because I wouldn’t have the hassle of trying to sell it. We shook hands and that is when the problems began.

The night that the car was sold, my neighbour phoned me and I spent ages answering all sorts of odd questions. From that point I realised that I had made a big mistake selling the car to this man. It was as if he thought I had done him out of money with some of the questions he was asking me. I was a bit annoyed with this and the call ended with me telling him that he could have the money back if he brought back the car; to which he replied by slamming the phone down. I have no experience with selling used cars but assumed that once the deal is done the deal is done.

I then heard from another friend of mine that my neighbour was spreading nasty lies around about me. He was telling everyone that would listen that I had cheated him out of a lot of money for a used car that was a piece of junk. I tackled the neighbour about it but he denied the whole thing. Needless to say we have not spoken since and neither have our wives. My advice to people is never to sell used cars to friends or neighbours.

If you are purchasing used cars and you need some finance you may be worried that this is going to prove difficult. We all know that lenders are not so forthcoming when it comes to giving out loans anymore but it doesn’t mean that there is no way you will get a loan. Even those who don’t have a great credit rating can pick up a loan for used cars if they go about it correctly. If you want to improve your chances of getting used car finance then the following information should help.

- Make sure that you are prepared before approaching any lender. This means having an answer to all the possible questions they might ask you – any hesitation could harm your ability to get a loan. It is not a good idea to apply for a loan if you are not prepared. Why you want to buy the car and how you can meet the repayments are the two main questions that you will need to answer.

- It is a good idea to have as much documentation to support your application as possible. The things you should bring are payslips, bank statements and a list of income and expenditure for each month. If you fail to have the necessary documentation it will delay your application and make you seem a bit risky because the lenders will think that you don’t know what you are doing.

- Give a good reason for why you want to purchase a vehicle and explain why you are choosing used cars in particular. A lender will see you as a sensible borrower if you tell them the main reason for choosing a used car is so that you do not get into too much debt.

- When discussing repayments make sure that you sound positive about your ability to do this – any doubt in your voice could harm your application.

Whenever you happening to be looking for used cars for sale, you are always better off trying to research your vehicles beforehand. This reserach will let you find the best cars available for each category you look at. And when you finally finish your research, you could find yourself leaving the car delears with a splendid used ford or even a used audi.

Looking to Buy Used Cars?

Some people consider buying a used car too much of a hassle. They think that their money would be better spent on a new car, one which they can be certain of its past. However, what they fail to realize is that, even with a new car, there is the possibility of deception or existing problems. The trick is not to buy a new car in order to escape difficulty, but to do the right amount of research to ensure a perfect purchase experience.

Something you should always remember when looking to buy used cars is to never trust what the seller says. If you are buying from a dealer, demand a vehicle history report. Do NOT always trust the car title. Occasionally during transport, the details of a car are changed. If you only go by the information given, you run the risk of paying for a car that was once listed as “totalled” in another location and time. This was the issue for many cars that were sold during post-Hurricane Katrina. Many flooded cars drifted their way north and were cleaned up and sold with a clean slate. All whilst corrosion was slowly destroying the car on the inside. This is not to say that all used car dealers are thieves, but their main goal is to make a living and they may not be as thorough as you want them to be concerning a “new” car.

Before you spend your hard earned cash on used cars, become acquainted with the “lemon” laws in your country or state. Lemon laws are designed for the reselling of cars. They declare that if a purchased car fails an inspection within a certain amount of time, you are fully entitled to a refund. These laws were created to protect the consumer, but you can’t utilize them properly if you are not aware of their advantages or purchase a vehicle “as-is”.

Another important thing to bear in mind is that the person selling the car might not be the real owner. When you buy from an individual, be sure to check the registration of the vehicle before you hand over any cash. You don’t want to find out that your money went nowhere or that the car has a list of liens against it. The problem can be avoided by going to a respectable dealership.

Whether you buy a new car or a used car, remember “you get what you pay for”. While you should always try to find a great deal, don’t jump at the cheapest price. Check the mileage and age of the car against that car’s make and model. If it’s too old or has done too many miles, let it go. It makes more sense to try to bargain for a reliable car than to purchase a cheapy that will fail when you really need it most. The internet is a great place to search for information.
