Learning is now available in disc format, where your computer becomes the centre of your learning. Through video streaming, you are able to see your instructors showing you how to perform the required skill, and then have a go at it yourself – in a virtual lab environment. Don’t take any chances and look at a small selection of training examples before you sign the purchase order. Always insist on videoed instructor demonstrations and a variety of audio-visual and interactive sections. It’s unwise to select online only courseware. Due to the variable nature of connection quality from most broadband providers, ensure that you have access to CD or DVD ROM based materials. Considering how a program is ‘delivered’ to you is often missed by many students. How many stages do they break the program into? What is the order and do you have a say in when you’ll get each part? The majority of training companies will set up a 2 or 3 year study programme, and deliver each piece one-by-one as you get to the end of each exam. If you think this sound logical, then consider this: What would their reaction be if you find it difficult to do everything at the proposed pace? And maybe you’ll find their order of completion won’t fit you as well as some other order of studying might. For maximum flexibility and safety, most students now choose to make sure that every element of their training is delivered immediately, and not in stages. It’s then your own choice at what speed and in which order you want to finish things. We can’t make a big enough deal out of this point: You have to get round-the-clock 24×7 instructor support. We can tell you that you’ll strongly regret it if you don’t follow this rule rigidly. Avoid, like the plague, any organisations that use ‘out-of-hours’ messaging systems – with the call-back coming in during the next ‘working’ day. This is useless when you’re stuck and need an answer now. The very best programs utilise a web-based 24×7 system combining multiple support operations throughout multiple time-zones. You’re offered a simple interface which switches seamlessly to the best choice of centres any time of the day or night: Support when you need it. You can’t afford to accept less than this. Direct-access 24×7 support is really your only option with IT study. Maybe burning the midnight-oil is not your thing; often though, we’re out at work at the time when most support is available. You should look for an accredited exam preparation programme included in your course. Avoid depending on unauthorised exam preparation systems. The way they’re phrased is sometimes startlingly different – and this could lead to potential problems when it comes to taking the real exam. Ensure that you verify your knowledge by doing quizzes and practice in simulated exam environments to get you ready for the real deal. The perhaps intimidating chore of securing your first job can be eased by training colleges, through a Job Placement Assistance programme. Because of the massive shortage of skills in Britain right now, it’s not too important to get too caught up in this feature though. It isn’t so complicated as you might think to secure your first job as long as you’re correctly trained and certified. CV and Interview advice and support may be available (if it isn’t, consult one of our sites). Ensure you work on your old CV right away – not after you’ve qualified! Many junior support jobs have been offered to students who are still learning and haven’t got any qualifications yet. This will at least get you into the ‘maybe’ pile of CV’s – rather than the ‘No’ pile. The most reliable organisations to help you find a job are usually specialised and independent recruitment consultants. Because they get paid commission to place you, they have the necessary incentive to try that bit harder. A regular grievance of a number of training companies is how hard trainees are prepared to study to get top marks in their exams, but how little effort that student will then put into getting the job they have studied for.
